Westminster, CO - Robert Alan Hilbig died at home, with his family around him, on April 12, 2025 in Westminster, Colorado at the age of 86. Robert is survived by his wife, Jean G Hilbig; his daughter, Sheri D Martin of Longmont, Colorado; his son, Randall A Hilbig of Longmont, Colorado; 5 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren and his brother Roger Hilbig of Beavercreek, Ohio. He is preceded in death by his mother, Clara Broniman Hilbig; his father, Lawrence Hilbig; his brother Lawrence Hilbig Jr; and his daughter, Deborah Lynn Schultz.


Robert was born on July 7, 1938, in Mooreland, Oklahoma, to Lawrence and Clara Hilbig. He graduated from Mooreland High School on May 15, 1956. In May 1960, Robert earned a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from Northwestern State College in Alva, Oklahoma. He continued his education at Oklahoma State University, graduating with a Master of Science degree in August 1965.




In 1959, Robert married Darlene Pearson, with whom he had three children before their divorce in 1975. He later married Jean Gaines in July 1979, and they lived happily together until his passing.




Robert began his career at Dow Chemical Company at the Rocky Flats Nuclear Weapons Plant in Golden, Colorado, in 1966 as a chemist. While working, he attended Colorado State University and graduated with a Master Degree in Business. Robert retired as a manager from Rocky Flats in 1992.




Robert was a passionate bridge player and a dedicated member of the Rocky Flats team, competing for many years in the Denver Industrial Bridge League. After retiring, he continued to enjoy the game regularly at the Senior Center.




Robert and Jean shared a love for camping and riding their Yamaha dirt bikes throughout the Rocky Mountain West. Upon retirement, Robert upgraded from a pickup camper to an RV, embarking on a 20-year adventure that took them to every state in the US and most of Canada. Together, they also explored the world. At home, Robert embraced his farming roots to maintain their 5-acre urban ranch, where they boarded horses and raised dogs.




A Celebration of Life is planned for May. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Wild Animal Sanctuary in Keenesburg, Colorado.
