Everett Hunter Obituary
Woodward, OK - Everett Bruce Hunter was born on the family farm just east of Woodward, Oklahoma on August 8, 1934 to Joe B. and Viola (Bassett) Hunter and died on August 30, 2024 at the age of 90.
Everett grew up on the family farm, growing wheat and running cattle. He attended a one-room school house, Red Rock School District 37, Woodward Junior High, and Woodward High School, graduating in 1952. In high school, Everett was an active member of the Woodward FFA, having won High Individual at the National Livestock Judging Championship at the Denver National Livestock Show in 1952, as well as receiving his State Star Farmer degree in 1952. After graduation, he attended Oklahoma A&M University one year, then returned home to help Joe (his Dad) with the farming. He often joked that he left college early after teaching the university all he knew.
Everett married his high school sweetheart, Louise VanNostrand on July 25, 1954. They made their home in Woodward, until purchasing the family farm from his parents and then moved their family east of town. Four children were born to this 70-year union - Christi Jo, Barbara Ann, David Bruce and Nancy Lynn. While Everett farmed and ranched all his life, he also worked on the construction of Fisher Grain Elevator, worked for Woodward Co-Op driving a propane truck, Schlumberger Well Service in the oil field, and retired as President of Woodward Production Credit Association. He later completed an unexpired term as the Woodward County District 3 Commissioner. He never viewed these as only jobs, but as opportunities to meet and serve his neighbors, rarely ever forgetting a person or their story.
Everett was baptized and became a member of the Woodward First Christian Church, Disciples of Christ in 1944. He has served as Deacon, Elder, Chairman of the Board and served on other committees through the years.
Everett and Louise helped usher the family farm to becoming a Centennial Farm in 1996. They enjoyed traveling and meeting people and had many fun times with family and friends over the years.
Everett is survived by his wife, Louise Hunter of Woodward; three children, Christi Pagett and husband Wade of Woodward; David Hunter and wife Laura of Woodward; and Nancy Lancaster and husband, Jeff of Wagoner, Okla; eight grandchildren, Amy Powers and husband Curtis of Mustang, Okla; Cassie Carter and husband, Nick of Tucker, Georgia; Clarissa Benson and husband Chris of Oklahoma City; Riley Pagett and wife Lauren of Washington D.C.; Katelyn Vanderwork and husband Austin of Woodward; Hunter Lancaster and wife Callie of Wagoner, Oklahoma; Logan Hunter and wife Michelle of Woodward; and Annalea Sander and husband Cody of Woodward; 16 great grandchildren; and lots of family and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents; daughter Barbara Ann Hunter; and granddaughter Machelle Louise Pagett.
Everett's life was a reflection of his love for Jesus. He believed in hard work and in creating big memories with those he loved. He will be remembered for his sharp wit, good humor, recall ability, respect for neighbor, card playing, and all out joy for life.
Services to celebrate his life will be Wednesday, September 4, 2024 at 10:00 a.m. at the First Christian Church, in Woodward. Burial will be in the Elmwood Cemetery in Woodward under the direction of Billings Funeral Home.
