Ann Hohweiler Obituary

Buena "Ann" (Johnson) Hohweiler passed from this life on February 26, 2025. She will be greatly missed by her family and the many friends she made throughout her life. A celebration of her life will be held at the Billings Funeral Home Chapel at 10:00 am, Thursday, March 6, 2025, followed by a burial at Elmwood Cemetery in Woodward.

Ann was born in Woodward Hospital, located then on 4th Street, to William Hopkins "Hop" Johnson and Marion Johnson on May 1st, 1941. With an older brother and sister, and another brother and sister to be added in the next few years, Ann grew up in a home that struggled to make ends meet.

The 1947 Woodward tornado that destroyed the family home in north Woodward was a terrifying event in the little girl's life, memories of which left an indelible impression on her for the remainder of her days. Though the family was fortunate to survive that horrific storm, more trouble lay ahead. Ann's father passed away without warning when she was 10, and her mother passed when Ann was 12, leaving her and her 4 siblings orphaned. With advice and counsel from an aunt and uncle, Bob and Mary Hoffman, the remaining family was able to stay together. Everyone worked to put food on the table. By the time Ann graduated from High School, she was married to the love of her life, Ronnie Hohweiler. They were together for nearly 67 years. They have two children, a son Robin (Mary Ann), who retired from the U.S. Navy, and a daughter Tammy Roberts (David), who currently serves as the Woodward County Court Clerk. Ann was a doting grandmother to Veronica Hohweiler of Los Angeles, CA and Derrick Roberts and wife Ashley of Woodward, and great-grandmother to Destinie Roberts Wasden (Kash) of Tulsa, Drake Roberts, and Dax Roberts.

Ann became very interested in state and local politics in her early twenties, and that interest led to her having a positive and lasting impact on Woodward. She blazed trails for women in the areas of politics, government, social services, and business. She volunteered time to the campaigns of numerous county, state, and national candidates that she believed could be effective elected leaders. She eventually became the 6th District Vice-Chair of the Oklahoma Republican Party. Ann also put her political experience to work when she became the first woman elected to a seat on the Woodward City Commission. As a Commissioner-at-Large, she lead the fight to remove the very unpopular parking meters from the downtown area. She also saw the arrival of the W.R. Grace Company (now CF Industries) to Woodward, bringing increased job opportunities and tax revenue to the City. Ann worked for Woodward County Sheriff Creel Gaston for 12 years, becoming a CLEET certified deputy. She learned the duties of the office, starting as a dispatcher, part-time jailer, process server, and firearms expert. Ann's next opportunity came with a call from the President of the Stock Exchange Bank, Bruce Benbrook, who offered her a job as a teller in the Bank. Ann took the job, and under the tutelage of Elaine Dewald, then a VP of the bank, she took advantage of every educational opportunity that became available to increase her knowledge of banking. When a new branch bank was proposed for a Downs Avenue location, Ann was presented the responsibility of overseeing construction of the new facility, working daily with architects and construction contractors from groundbreaking to the new bank's opening. Ann's reward was being named manager of the new Stock Exchange Bank Downs Avenue Branch, a position she held until she retired from banking in 2008. During her years as a bank officer, she trained many young people to perform various positions in the organization, many of whom are still key employees.

Ann did not remain idle in retirement. She served several terms on the Northwest Domestic Crisis Center Board and was in fact instrumental in establishing the Crisis Center here in Woodward.

Ann was always a student of history, especially local history and that led to her serving more than a decade as a board member and officer with the Board of Directors of the Plains Indians & Pioneers Museum, and as a trustee on the PIPM Historical Foundation.

The family requests that donations in lieu of flowers be made to the Plains Indians & Pioneers Museum in Woodward, OK with Billings Funeral Home in Woodward accepting the donations.
