Shirley's Story

Shirley Nelson, 79 year old Woodward resident, died Sunday, April 12, 2015 in Oklahoma City. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 am Thursday, April 16, 2015 at the St. Peter Catholic Church with Reverend Joe Arledge as Celebrant. Interment will follow in the DeBolt Cemetery in Arnett A Prayer Vigil and Rosary will be held at 7:00 pm Wednesday, April 15, 2015 at St. Peter Catholic Church. Arrangements are under the direction of the Billings Funeral Home. Shirley Rue (Cromwell) Nelson was born December 7, 1935 in Shattuck, Oklahoma to Matthew Riley and Zelma (Floyd) Cromwell. Shirley attended school in Arnett and graduated from Arnett High School in 1954. A few weeks after graduation Shirley married Paul Nelson and they made their home in Goodwell. Several moves were made while Paul attended college and served in the United States Army. Shirley and Paul made their home in Kingfisher where they raised their children, Cherri and Keith. Shirley worked in clothing retail for 44 years. She began working at Lawrence’s in Kingfisher. She then moved to Weatherford and began working for Anthony’s which later became know as Stage. Shirley transferred to the Woodward location and continued working up until February of this year when she became ill. Over the years she worked with her daughter and granddaughters. Shirley loved buying clothes for her family. After attending the Catholic church for many years with her family, she became a member of the St. Peter Catholic Church on Easter Sunday in 2013. It was a joyous day for Shirley and her family. She then became a team member of the RCIA team. She loved her church dearly. Shirley enjoyed watching her great-grandchildren, they were her Jewels! Shirley is survived by her daughter, Cherri Fike and husband Pat of Woodward; her son, Keith Nelson and wife Tanna of Checotah; grandchildren, Ryan Fike and wife Jordan and their children, Ryce and Paxton; Candace Smith and husband Jeff and their children, Kelton; Jacey; and Paizlee; Christy Durkee and husband Matt and their children, Reese and Beau; Josh Nelson and wife Jessica and their children, Trasten and Serena; Amber Sanders and her children, Jamie; Jaydan and Karlie; Felicia Smith and her children, Austin and Garret; Alexis Nelson; one brother, John Bernard Rucker and wife Kathyrn of California; nieces, nephews other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Dorothy Bealmear; and Wanda McHenry. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Peter Catholic Church with the funeral accepting the contributions on behalf of the family.
