Roger Butler, 77 year old Liberal, Kansas resident died Saturday, June 18, 2016 in Wichita, Kansas. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm Friday, June 24, 2016 in the Billings Funeral Home Chapel in Woodward with Reverend Soloman Ross officiating. Interment will follow in the Curtis Cemetery.
Roger Ellis Butler was born on November 20, 1938 in Freedom, Oklahoma to Everett and Ethel Edna (Ramey) Butler. He grew up at the Butler homeplace and attended Curtis schools and graduated from Mooreland High School in 1956. During high school, Roger was very involved in FFA and served as President. He attended Northwestern and received his Bachelors degree. He was united in marriage to Nancy Horn and they made their first home in Alva while Roger finished up school. They were blessed with four children, Roland Ray, Ret Duane, Rhenda Lanae, and Verl Clifford.
The family moved to Elkhart, Kansas where Roger taught and coached football. They then moved to Rosston, Oklahoma and to Lakin, Kansas. In 1976 they moved to Wellington, Kansas and Roger coached girls basketball and Junior High football. In 1979, he moved to Liberal, Kansas where he coached girls basketball. He continued living in Liberal until his retirement in 2000. After his retirement Roger started teaching at the Seward County Community College. He was a lifelong educator who helped numerous kids throughout his lifetime. During many summers Roger farmed for Otis and Mary Lee Molz in Deerfield, Kansas.
Roger was blessed with another daughter, Jaycee from his second marriage. He was the type of guy that would do anything for you. He always went above and beyond what others would do. Roger enjoyed driving his tractor and listening to sports on the radio, especially baseball. He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren.
He is survived by his three sons, Roland Butler of Watonga, Ret Butler and wife Amy of Georgetown, Delaware, Verl Butler and wife Brenda of Kismet, Kansas; two daughters, Rhenda Jones and husband Doug of Burlington, Kansas, Jaycee Butler of Liberal, Kansas; 13 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; three brothers, Roy Butler and wife Agnes, Gary Butler and wife Ruth Ann, Vernon Butler and wife Kathy; other relatives and many friends. The family would like to thank his beloved Nurse, Donna Pepa who has been by his side for the last two years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Nancy, brother Paul Butler and grandchildren Joshua and Jeremy Butler
