Michael's Story

Michael “Mike” Paul Whiteman of Araphoe, Nebraska, entered this life on August 21, 1963 and exited this life on August 23, 2015. A Memorial service will be held 10:00 am Tuesday, September 15, 2015 at Billings Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in McCracken, Kansas at a later date. Mike was born to Sheila Sander and Duane “Big Mike” Whiteman on August 21, 1963 in Burlington, Colorado. He attended public schools in Hays, Kansas. Mike grew up in Hays, Kansas, then moved to Oklahoma in the early 1980's where he was introduced to the oilfield. Mike worked in the oilfield and thoroughly enjoyed being out on the rig. He worked for numerous oilfield companies, including Triad, Unit, and Nabors. Mike enjoyed his numerous road trips and good times with his buddies, Clapper and Syms. He was passionate about history and traveled to numerous sites of battles and wars. Mike and Mark made a trip to see and experience Custers Last Stand, a memory that Mike spoke of frequently. He took many of his nieces to tour Wilson Battle Creek in Missouri and was better at explaining what occurred there than the informational signs or even the people working there. Mike was always calling someone on college football Saturdays to place his bets for the day and to agitate Kim about her Huskers. Mike was an avid Colorado Buffalos fan. On game day, Mike would always call all the Sooner fans he knew just to rile them up by calling them the “Gooners”. Mike was passionate about wrestling and was always talking to his nephews, Dawson and Ryan and constantly pushing them and encouraging them to capitalize on their talents Mike had a special place in his life for Boston Terriers, he always had a Joker or a Scooter following him around. Mike was always helping other people out and always encouraging people. He would spend his last dollar if he believed it would truly help you. Heaven sure got a good one. Mike is survived by his mother, Sheila Sander of Woodward; brother Mark Whiteman of Araphoe, Nebraska; sisters Kim Dudley of Woodward; Micki Ensign and husband Brad of Goodland, Kansas; step-mother Rosetta Whiteman of Goodland, Kansas; one step sister, Sonya Schwartz and husband Steve of Topeka, Kansas; nieces and nephews, Vanessa VanZee and husband Tanner, Katie Whiteman, Kylene Whiteman, Sierra Dudley, Chelsea Dudley, Ryan Dudley, Dawson Ensign, Emmi Ensign, Kyan Ensign, Sayler Schwartz, Sage Schwartz, and Sawyer Schwartz; two great nieces, Autumn VanZee and Lakyn Marlatt, two great nephews, Wyatt Van Zee and Delten Sosanya, his great friends, Charles (Chucky) Clapper and Stevie Syms, numerous other family members and friends.
