Melanie's Story

Melanie Dawn Barnett Rankhorn, 56, of Chillicothe, Ohio, passed from this life on June 13, 2015. She was born on April 16, 1959 in Ashland, Clark County, Kansas, to J.D. and Beverly Barnett. She was baptized at age 11, on February 28, 1971, at the Rylie Road church of Christ in Dallas, Texas. She graduated from North Platte High School in North Platte, Nebraska, in 1977. She graduated from Abilene Christian University, in Abilene, Texas, with a Bachelors of Science Degree in Education, in 1982. She graduated from the Women’s Program at Brown Trail School of Preaching in 1994. She worked as a Speech Therapist for the Tri-County School System, including Rotan, Roby, Hutto, and Aspermont, Texas from 1982-1984. After moving to Altus, Oklahoma, she worked as a Speech Therapist for Altus Public Schools from 1984-1992. From 1992-1994, she worked as the Church Secretary at Brown Trail School of Preaching, in Fort Worth, Texas. She also worked as a Parent Trainer at the Parent Educator Resource Center, Ravenswood, West Virginia, from 2000-2006. Melanie was married on October 27, 1990, in Altus, Oklahoma, to James Byron Rankhorn. They had one son, the light of her life, Kadry Byron Wayne Rankhorn. She was a preacher’s daughter for 56 years, and a preacher’s wife for 21 years. Melanie lived in many states during her life, including Oklahoma, Texas, Nebraska, West Virginia, and Ohio. At the time of her death she was a faithful member of the Sunrush church of Christ, Chillicothe, Ohio. Melanie was a talented crafter and artist. She taught herself to crochet and knit and made many graduation afghans and baby blankets. She also illustrated books, painted pictures, as well as other craft items. She was known for her beautiful singing, her laugh, and contagious smile. Melanie is survived by her husband, James Rankhorn and son Kadry, of Chillicothe; her mother, Beverly Barnett, of Hiram, Georgia; sisters Tammy Driskell, of Austin, Texas, and Quayla Hope and husband Jeffery, of Hiram, Georgia; and 5 nephews and 2 nieces, Nathan Driskell and wife Jesiree, Nicole Wall and husband Marcus, both of Abilene, Texas; Jameson, Jadyn, Kenyon, Kalyn, Greyson Hope, Hiram, Georgia, and aunts, uncles, and cousins. Melanie was preceded in death by her father, J.D. Barnett, and brothers, Jay Dee and Ron, and her grandparents, Gail and Lois Demuth, Delbert and Zella Barnett, and mother-in-law, Joretta Rankhorn. Visitation will be Wednesday, June 17, at 10:00 a.m., with service to follow at 11:00 a.m. at the Sunrush church of Christ, Chillicothe, Ohio. Services will be officiated by J.D. Conley, Marietta, Ohio. Pallbearers are Gary McCann, Berlin McCann, Alan Swingle, Don Ferryman, Robert Blythe, and Richard Pritchett. Graveside services and interment will be at Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Rosston, Oklahoma, Saturday, June 20, 2015. Haller Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements. Myatt Funeral Home, Laverne, Oklahoma, is in charge of graveside arrangements.
