Mary Jane Baessler was born February 24, 1938 in Paris, Texas, she was the daughter of John and Dova (Charles) Baessler. Mary attended grade school in Coldwater, Kansas and Laverne, Oklahoma, graduating with the Class of 1956 from Laverne High School. Mary went on to attend Panhandle A&M, OU, and Northwestern State College earning her teaching degree in 1961. Mary married Dennis Cook on March 16, 1956 in Clayton, New Mexico, and to this union three sons were born; David, Todd, and Sheldon. Mary and Dennis raised the boys in Laverne, with Mary teaching 29 years for the Laverne Elementary, retiring in 1991. Mary and Les Walcher were married on November 21, 1984 in Laverne and she gained two more sons, Guy and Greg Walcher. Mary and Les resided in Laverne the rest of their lives and thoroughly enjoyed their time together. Mary was a member of the First Christian Church and served in many capacities over the years, from VBS teacher and CWF President to Board member. She truly possessed a servant's heart. Mary's hobbies were sewing, cross stitching, reading and playing bridge with the ladies at the Senior Citizens Center in Buffalo every Monday. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, husbands Dennis Cook and Les Walcher, brothers Ted, Keith, and Moritz (Popeye) Baessler. Mary went to be with her Lord and Savior on March 16, 2016 at her home in Laverne. Left to cherish her memory are her children; David and Janet Cook, Laverne, Todd and Dena Cook, Laverne, Sheldon and Connie Cook, McAlester, Guy and Susan Walcher, Mustang, Greg Walcher, Millcreek; grandchildren; Doug and Kristin Cook, Amber Cook, Greg and Stefani Cook, Jared Cook, Kyle Cook, Brandi and Garrett Street, Tyler Cook, Courtney Cook, Jeramy and Kathryn McPhetridge, Nate and Amanda McPhetridge, Erika Gillock, Logan and Kristen Walcher, April Walcher, Peyton Walcher, Conner Walcher; great-grandchildren Corban, Paige, and Dagan Cook, Sam and Caroline Cook, Alyssa, Sarah, and Lauren McPhetridge, Caleb and Hannah McPhetridge, Olivia Gillock, Beckley and Holden Walcher, Lucian Humphrey and Kason Leach; sisters; Dovie Shuman, Laverne and Nancy Myler, Aurora, CO; best friend Vickie Luckett, and many other family and friends. Funeral Services were held Saturday, March 19, 2016 at the First Christian Church, Laverne, Oklahoma, with Pastor Marvin Garrison officiating, pianist Lynn Kraft, granddaughter Stefani Cook sang "His Eyes Are On The Sparrow". Casketbearers were Doug Cook, Greg Cook, Jared Cook, Kyle Cook, Tyler Cook, and Logan Walcher.
