Hazel's Story

Hazel Shryock, 91 year old Woodward resident, passed away on Friday, February 20, 2015 in Woodward, surrounded by her family. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, February 24, 2015 in the Billings Funeral Home Chapel in Woodward with the Reverend Junior Zollinger officiating. Burial will follow in the North Persimmon Cemetery, east of Sharon. Hazel Dawn (Pugh) Shryock was born July 1, 1923 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma to Harry Cleo and Jessie Dawn (Williams) Pugh. Hazel attended Kindergarten in Oklahoma City, then the family moved to the farm, two miles south of Gage. Hazel attended school in Gage and played in the school band. After Hazel received her drivers license, she would help deliver milk and eggs from her parents store. Hazel met Edward Shryock on a blind date and they were later united in marriage on April 23, 1939 in Shattuck, Oklahoma. They were blessed with two children, Kenneth Edward and Sonja Sue. The couple farmed and ranched in the Sharon-Mutual area for 48 years. Hazel helped her husband on the family farm and also worked at Cowden’s Manufacturing, Devines, Pantorium Cleaners, Hopkins Shoe Mart, and Oliver’s Shoe Store. After Edwards death in 1987, she moved to Woodward and she has lived there since that time. Hazel was baptized in 1937 at the First Baptist Church of Arnett and she later joined the First Baptist Church of Gage. She enjoyed being a Pink Lady at the Woodward Regional Hospital, playing cards with family and friends and attending ball games to watch her grandchildren. She was a loving mother and grandmother who was called Gram by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In 2001, a special friend and companion, Jack Stepp, entered her life and soon became like part of her family. She is survived by her son, Kenneth Shryock and wife Sue of Woodward; daughter Sonja Sue Brown of Woodward; three grandchildren, Dr. Ronnie Steadman and Robin of Cherokee, Kyle Shryock of Ulysses, Kansas, Dr. Brenda Huenergardt of Shattuck; two great-granddaughters, Patricia and Ashley Steadman; sister, Lovae Seaton and husband Bill of San Diego, California; sister-in-law, Betty Pugh of Woodward; nieces, nephews, and many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, her parents-in-law, Charlie and Mable Shryock, her step-dad, Edgar Oakley, her husband Edward, her grandson, Kevin Don Shryock, her brother Dwight Pugh and special friend, Jack Stepp. Memorial contributions may be made to the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation with the funeral home accepting the contributions.
