Hal's Story

Hal Thomas, 83 year old Woodward resident, died Friday, March 11, 2016 in Oklahoma City doing what he loved to do, watching basketball. A Memorial Service Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, April 1, 2016 at the St. Peters Catholic Church with Reverend Joe Arledge officiating. Burial will follow in the Elmwood Cemetery with the Billings Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Hal Fredrick Thomas was born on January 22, 1933 in Kibby, Oklahoma to Charles and Erma Maude (Mapes) Thomas. He was the youngest of eight children. Hal grew up helping his brother and dad tend to their homestead north of Ft. Supply. He attended and graduated from Ft. Supply High School. After graduation, he went to work at Western State Hospital in Ft. Supply as an orderly on Ward 9. After two years he transferred to Carpentry at the Power House on the hospital grounds. In 1957, Hal met the love of his life, Marilyn Sue Patterson at Western State where she took her psychiatric training. They were united in marriage on September 6, 1958. They made their home in Ft. Supply and to this union one child was born, Robin Lynn.

Hal enjoyed fishing, hunting, and playing Santa on the hospital wards and other places around Ft. Supply. In 1970, the family moved west of Woodward to his present home. In 1974, Hal took up the sport of racing stock cars at Crystal Beach Speedway in Woodward. Robin turned 14 that year so his car number was 14. Shortly thereafter, Sue followed suit, and it became a family affair. Racing at Woodward on Friday nights, Enid on Saturday nights and Elk City on Sunday afternoons. They retired from racing in 1983 and they took up going to baseball and basketball games. Hal also loved watching Purple Martins and he built many houses for them that he delivered all over Oklahoma.

Hal was a member of the St. Peters Catholic Church.

He is survived by one daughter, Robin Lynn Thomas and companion Neal Scrimsher of Enid; grandchildren, Dustin Webb and wife Destenie of Canadian; Darin Webb of Lexington, Oklahoma; Heather Webb and husband Paul of Enid, Melanie Webb Daniels and companion Tim of Pittsburg, Oklahoma; great-grandchildren, Abby Boston and husband Steve of McAlester, Madison and Melinda Webb, Nikki Webb, Skyler Webb, Bella Webb, Hope and Grace Webb, Dakotah Webb; great-great-grandson, Jason Boston; special great-nephew Shawn McDowell and wife Katrina of Mutual; good friend, George Roberts; numerous great-nieces and nephews, cousins and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, six sisters, one brother, his wife Sue and his puppy dog Lady.

In lieu of flowers, Robin has requested donations be made in Hal and Sue Thomas memory to St. Jude Children's Hospital in Tulsa.
