Francis's Story

Francis Eugene Wise passed away on December 12, 2015. He was born on August 27, 1929 to Ira Ottis and Edna Hazel (Morrison) Wise at Tryon, Oklahoma. At age five, he moved with his family to Mooreland, Oklahoma where his father opened the Wise and Sons Creamery. His mother was recovering from typhoid fever and Francis used this opportunity to explore the entire community and he would show up at someone’s home at lunch or dinner uninvited. His mother finally resorted to hooking him to the clothes line to keep him home. While attending school he played many sports but especially loved to play basketball. He was also a master at roller skating. He graduated from Mooreland High School and then attended OBU for a year before enlisting in the U. S. Army. He was stationed in Baltimore, Maryland where he was trained in artillery. He was honorably discharged and returned to Woodward to help with the creamery that had now expanded to Woodward. His creamery route took him though Hinton where he would stop and play catch with a young Johnny Bench. On March 21, 1956, he married Roberta Mae Reneau at the First Baptist Church in Mooreland and they have resided in Woodward since that time. Three sons were born to this union, Richard, Randy and Jon. He began his electrical career with Ray Smith Electric and then with Scott Kline of Kline Mechanical where he worked until his retirement in 1991. While driving through town he would point out a multitude of homes and businesses that he had wired as an electrician. He accepted Jesus as His Savior at an early age and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Woodward. When the new Baptist Church was being built (after his retirement) he became know as the “Sidewalk Superintendent” as he was at the job site everyday just to help in any way such as running errands or locating people and services for the contractor. He read his Bible through three times while the church was being built. He was honored at the dedication for his services. In later years he enjoyed going to the coffee shop to visit friends and telling good stories. A special nephew, Ernie Wise, made sure he had the transportation to get there. Francis was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Ema Jewel Wise; brother, Loren; and grandson Sean Henson Wise. He is survived by his wife of almost 60 years, Roberta, and three sons, Richard and wife Brenda; Randy and wife Shirley; Jon and wife Goldie, all of Woodward, grandchildren, Brion, Scott and Jordan Wise, and Cheryl French and five great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Remembrances may be shared online at www.billingsfuneralhomewoodward.com
