Fern's Story

Fern Day, 91 year old Woodward resident died Monday, January 23, 2017 in Woodward. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm Friday, January 27, 2017 in the First United Methodist Church with Reverend Shannon Davis officiating. Interment will follow in Elmwood Cemetery with the Billings Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Fern Elaine Day was born on March 3, 1925 in Otis, Kansas; she was the daughter of John and Amelia (Holstein) Scheuerman. Fern was reared in Otis and graduated from Otis High School with the class of 1943. Fern was united in marriage to George Lester Day on September 12, 1946 in Pauls Valley, Oklahoma where the couple made their home. They moved to Great Bend, Kansas and eventually made their home in Kingman, Kansas. The family then moved to Woodward in 1966. Fern was a housewife and full time mother of four. She cherished her children and grandchildren. She was a long time member of the First United Methodist Church, where she was always very giving of her time, willing to help where ever the need may be.

Fern was known for her keen wit and sense of humor and her love of music. She was a volunteer for the Woodward County Election Board for 40 years. She also was member of the Woodward Hospital Auxiliary. Fern was an avid bridge player and belonged to various clubs in Woodward. On occasion she was known to throw some pennies in a slot machine.

Fern is survived by her children, Sandra McGovney of Wichita, Kansas; Greg Day and wife Melinda of New Braunfels, Texas; Peggy Shaw and husband Randy of Woodward; Sally Thomas and husband Kevin of Prosper, Texas; eight grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; siblings, Virgil Scheuerman and wife Irene of Kansas; Gladys Bagby of Woodward; Shirley Scheuerman of Colorado; Harrison Scheuerman and wife Sherry of Missouri; several nieces; nephews; other family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, George L. Day; grandson, John Cooper Day; son-in-law, Michael McGovney; five sisters; and two brothers.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church with the funeral home accepting the contributions.
