Elsie Welch, 97 year old Woodward resident, died Monday, June 13, 2016 in the Grace Living Center in Woodward. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of the Billings Funeral Home.
Elsie Lee (Barry) Welch was born on October 16, 1918 in Hastings, Oklahoma to Bonny Lee and Goldie Violet (Wait) Barry. Elsie grew up in the Campo, Colorado area and attended school there until the 6th grade. She stopped going to school at that time to take care of her mother and her four siblings. The family moved to Waynoka and she later lived in the Mooreland area for many years.
Elsie was united in marriage to Fay Edward Welch on June 26, 1937 in Mooreland, Oklahoma. They made their first home in Cedardale, Oklahoma before moving to Mooreland. Elsie was a homemaker and a seamstress. There was nothing she couldn't create with a sewing machine. She also worked for Trego's Western Wear and she retired from the Horace Mann cafeteria, where she loved to serve the children lunch.
She was a member of the First Christian Church. Elsie raised singer canary's and she loved all birds. One of her favorite past times was talking to her dear friends, Suda Roberts and Pauline Peil on the phone. Elsie loved being with her family, especially her grandchildren. She loved making crazy quilts for all of her family.
She is survived by one son, Joe Welch and wife Connie of Woodward; three daughters, Elsie Mae Lambert of Marietta, Lois Stafford of Mooreland, Teresa Devine of Highlands Ranch, Colorado; one brother Junior Lee Dannar of Waynoka; one sister LouAnn Ross and husband Tim of Burnet, Texas; 16 grandchildren, Harvey, Terry, Mike, Greg, Jeff Lambert, Kellie Ayers, Edward Burke, Jr, Donna Burke, Bill and Mike Hedges, Kevin Cozens, Megan Devine, Jason Welch, Joshua Welch, Carla Goodballet, whom she raised; 39 great-grandchildren; 16 great-great-grandchildren and one on the way; other relatives and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Faye Welch in 1977, daughter, Madalyn Irving, grandson, Gary Lambert, great-grandson, Kollyn Scott Cozens, brothers, Earl Dannar, Howard Dannar, Harold Dannar, LeRoy Dannar and a sister Virginia Dannar Love.
