Donna's Story

Donna Rae Smith, 75 year old Freedom resident, died Friday, January 9, 2015 at Share Medical Center in Alva. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 13, 2015 at the First Christian Church of Freedom with the Reverend Mark Kinkel officiating. Burial will follow in the Freedom Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of the Billings Funeral Home. Donna Rae (Powers) Smith was born on September 28, 1939 in Freedom, Oklahoma to James “Jim” Gilbert and JoAnna Pearl (Nixon) Powers. Donna was reared in Freedom and attended the Freedom schools until her family moved to Stillwater her Junior year of high school. She graduated from Stillwater High School in 1957. While in school, Donna was very active in chorus and other organizations. Donna was united in marriage to Gunter B Smith on January 9, 1959 in Stillwater, Oklahoma. They made their home in Stillwater and were blessed with three sons, Brett who was born in Stillwater, Skylar who was born in Altus, and Eric who was born in Woodward. The family moved back to Freedom in 1964 and Donna has lived there since that time. Donna stayed home and took care of her boys when they were younger. She owned and operated Donna’s Delights Fashion Pacesetters in downtown Freedom for several years before going to work full time at the Freedom State Bank. She retired from the bank several years ago, but remained a major shareholder and served on the Board of Directors of this four-generation, 95 year old institution that was founded by her grandfather, David Powers, in 1919. Donna was a member of the First Christian Church of Freedom. Babies and small children held a special place in Donna’s heart and always brought a smile to her face. She loved spending time with her children and grandchildren, who loved her very much. She is survived by her three sons, Brett Smith and wife Terry of Freedom, and their children, Ryan, Gretchen, and Jared; Skylar Smith of Stroud, and his boys, Dylan, Gerit, Colton, and Jacob; Eric Smith of Freedom, and his daughter, JoAnna; one sister, DeAnna Benn and husband Bob of Woodward; two nephews, Martin Benn and wife Tricia; Nathan Benn and wife Lisa. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jim and JoAnna Powers, a sister, Jamie Powers, and her great-grandson, Sam Van Eeghen. Memorial contributions may be made to the Freedom Museum, Freedom Educational Foundation, or the Freedom Volunteer Fire Department with the funeral home accepting the contributions.
