Charlie's Story

Charlie Wellman, 75 year old Woodward resident, died Monday, January 5, 2015 in Woodward. A Memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm Saturday, January 17, 2015 in the First United Methodist Church in Woodward with Reverend Charlie Baumann officiating. Interment will follow in Elmwood Cemetery with the Billings Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Charlie Ray Wellman was born on July 7, 1939 in Woodward, Oklahoma; the son of George William and Mary Etta (Bynum) Wellman. Charlie spent his childhood in Woodward, and attended Woodward schools. He was inducted into the United States Navy in November of 1957. Charlie was united in marriage to Zelda Darlyne “Shorty” Dickson on February 4, 1958 in San Diego, California. Charlie and Shorty were married for 55 years. He was Honorably discharged from the Navy in 1960. Charlie and Shorty returned to Woodward, where Charlie began his law enforcement career with the Woodward Police Department in 1963. In 1975 he began his work with the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation retiring from the bureau in 1984. Charlie was self employed for a time before he began working for Hickman Drilling and then Weatherford ALS. On October 8, 2013 Shorty preceded Charlie in death. Charlie was united in marriage to Regina (Poage) Bowser on August 21, 2014 in Enid, Oklahoma. The couple made their home in the Tangier area. Charlie enjoyed spending his time hunting, fishing, traveling, or just tinkering outside in the garage. He was a Gunsmith in his spare time. He was also an accomplished leather artist. Charlie dearly loved his family and cherished his time spent with family and friends. He was a member of the Woodward Masonic Lodge #189 where he attained the rank of 32 Degree Mason, and he was a Life Member of the NRA. He was a member of the Faith United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife Regina of the home; one daughter, Terry Bussinger and husband Robert; one son, Todd Wellman and wife Karen all of Woodward; six grandsons, Trey Wellman of Oklahoma City; Hunter Wellman and wife Daurice of Woodward; Rob Bussinger and wife Bridget; Joshua Bussinger of Vidor, Texas; Tyson Bussinger and wife Peggy; Gabriel Bussinger of Woodward; great-grandchildren, Abriella Bussinger; Raiyna Bussinger; Max Bussinger; and Harmonee Bussinger; Zachary Ramirez; Sophee Bussinger; Caydence Wellman; and one joining the family in July; stepson; Jason Bowser of Woodward; step-granddaughter; Chasity Harris; two brothers, Robert Wellman and wife Marge of Ft. Garland, Colorado; James Wellman and wife Donna of Ringwood; two brothers-in-law, Billy Joe Dickson and wife LaDean of Altus; Marvin Mankle of Rio Rancho, New Mexico; sister-in-law; Sharon Martinez and husband Richard of Guymon; numerous nieces, nephews other family and many friends. Memorial contributions may be made to the Faith United Methodist Church or the Smile Train with the funeral home accepting the contributions.
