Bonita's Story

Text size

Bonita Gail (Forrest) Care, the baby of ten children, was born to Harold Wayne (Bill) and Rosetta Ruth (West) Forrest on September 7th, 1949, in Mooreland, Oklahoma. Bonita passed from this life on Tuesday, June 30th, 2015, at Newman Memorial Hospital. Bonita spent all the years of her youth growing up in Vici, Oklahoma, while attending Vici Schools and The First Christian Church. She was baptized on November 29, 1959, at the age of ten. She graduated from Vici High School in 1967. Bonita married Steven Jack Care on January 21, 1967, in the Apostolic Faith Church in Arnett, Oklahoma. Together they had two children: daughter Michelle Leigh was born in Woodward, Oklahoma on June 28th, 1967, and son Travis Wayne was born in Woodward, Oklahoma on March 18th, 1969. Proven by the many jobs that she did, Bonita didn’t shy away from work. She was at Ken’s Drug for more than thirty years, greeting and taking care of the Shattuck community. In the 1980s, she enjoyed driving a wheat truck during harvest for Ken Polin. With Steve by her side, they cleaned the Panhandle Eastern offices in the evening from 1985 to 1991 to provide spending money for Michelle at OSU. In September, 1995, Bonita moved on to work a few years at Bar S Monograms before going to work and eventually retiring in 2012 from Ellis County District Two. And throughout the years, she could be found helping out at Ed’s café and the Arnett café as well. In retirement, she enjoyed relaxing at home while marveling over her re-modeled kitchen, ordering from QVC (Steve called her the QVC Queen), attending her grandchildren’s activities, and she especially enjoyed working in her beautiful yard and growing gorgeous flowers. In retirement, Bonita continued to serve the Ellis County Election Board, doing this service for over twenty years. Bonita looked forward to entertaining her family and friends for the 4th of July. As soon as the fireworks ended, she was dragging out her Santa collection and buying gifts for her favorite holiday, Christmas. Even beyond being ‘cool’ by her grandkids, she still continued the tradition of lighting a candle and singing “Happy Birthday” to our Savior, Jesus Christ. Although not often enough, Bonita’s large family created plenty of opportunities for gathering together to reminisce and create more lasting memories. Hearing of the escapades with her sisters always provided hours of laughs for the entire family. However, nothing could compare to the vacations and shopping trips she and Steve took with their grandkids. They truly cherished making lifetime memories with them. Bonita was preceded in death by her parents Bill and Rosetta Forrest; in-laws Jack and Betty Care; sister Arlene Schamburg and brother Jim Forrest. Bonita and Steve lost their precious son Travis Wayne Care, on July 25th, 1969. Bonita is survived by Steven Jack, her husband of forty-eight years; daughter Michelle and her husband Travis, of Sharon, Oklahoma, and grandchildren Taryn Lane, Taylor Lynn, and Trace Logan; sisters Wilda Croft of Enid, Oklahoma; Belva Sutton and husband Bud of Sharon, Oklahoma; Cherri Cadwell and husband Junior of Vici, Oklahoma; brothers Kenneth Forrest of Woodward, Oklahoma; Max Forrest and wife Billie of Albuquerque, New Mexico; Rex Forrest and wife Dianne of Mount Pleasant, Texas; and Don Forrest of Helena, Oklahoma; sisters-in-law Cheryl Barr and husband Donald of Vici, Oklahoma, and Dana Yowell and husband Joe of Reydon, Oklahoma; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, and uncles; and Bonita’s innumerable special friends who made her heart full. Memorial service will be held Monday July 6, 2015 at 10:30 am at the Chaffin Auditorium, Shattuck High School, Shattuck, Oklahoma.
