Bobby's Story

Bobby (B.J.) Joe Harmon, 80, of Woodward, OK passed away on May 16, 2015 at his residence in Woodward. B.J. was born to Herbert and Opal (Dixon) Harmon in Houston, MO on February 25, 1935. He accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior in 1949 when he was 11 years old. B.J. attended high school in Wynona, MO where he enjoyed playing basketball. While playing high school basketball, B.J. in 1956 scored 125 points in one state game. This set a new state record which he had the honor of holding for the next 45 years. B.J. served his country in the U.S. Army from 1962-1967. He served in the Vietnam War from 1962-1964 where he was a sharp shooter and spent 9 months on the Ho Chi Minh Trail as a forward observer. B.J. spent most of his life in Missouri where he drove a truck cross country for 5 years and farmed many years. In 1980 he moved to Canadian, TX where he began to work in the oil field driving a truck. After settling in Woodward in 1987, he worked for Arco, BOC, and Linde. When he retired from Linde, he started working with Orion until 2015. B.J. was a member of the Crown Heights Baptist Church in Woodward. On April 20, 2004 he married Bobbie Merry in Woodward, OK. In addition to his parents, B.J. was preceded in death by his first wife Pauline Harmon of 47 years, one brother Charles Harmon, an infant brother and infant sister. Survivors include B.J.’s wife Bobbie Harmon of Woodward, OK; two sisters Marie Pyle and husband Frank of Raymondsville, MO; Sharon Courtney and husband Luther of Raymondsville MO; one sister-in-law Ilene Harmon of Cabool, MO; one son Scott Harmon; one daughter Sheila Swindle and husband David; three step children Vickie Evans and husband Jim of Branson West, MO, Sheena Sherrill and husband Rick of Enid, OK, Michael Merry and wife Yulonda of Woodward, OK.; two grandchildren Brian Swindle and wife Connie, Brandon Swindle; seven step grandchildren Chris Evans and wife Jill, Cody Evans and wife Dara, Maranda Merry, Malerie Merry, Mitzi Merry, Carissa Hernandez and husband Ray, Courtney Sherrill; nine step great-grandchildren Alexis, Addison and Dagan Evans, Brason and Beckam Evans, Evaline Bledsoe, Jade Dimayo, Abbigiel and Carter Hernandez; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held on Tuesday May 19, 2015 at 1:30 pm at the Crown Heights Baptist Church, Woodward, Oklahoma with burial following in Harmon Cemetery, Harmon, Oklahoma.
