Vernon's Story

Vernon A. Merriman, 57 year old Woodward resident, died Tuesday, September 6, 2016 in Tulsa. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, September 10, 2016 at the First Assembly of God Church with the Reverend Sheldon Riley, the Reverend Gary Gunsolus, and the Reverend Donnetta Hunter officiating. Burial will follow in the Sunnyside Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of the Billings Funeral Home.

Vernon Alden Merriman, 57-year-old Woodward resident, lost his battle with cancer on September 6, 2016. Vernon was born December 16, 1958 in Woodward, Oklahoma. He was the youngest child of Charles and Lolabelle Merriman. He grew up in Woodward, and graduated with the class of 1977. In August 1977 he married the love of his life, Darlene Buck, in Vici, Oklahoma. Vernon and Darlene lived for a time in Alva, Oklahoma while attending college at Northwestern Oklahoma State University. They later moved to Vici where they owned and operated the Best Way Grocery for a time and later settled in Woodward, Oklahoma. Vernon and Darlene were blessed with 6 children.

Growing up, Vernon loved playing football for the Woodward Boomers. At the age of 14 he joined a group of youth who set a Guinness Book of World Records by riding a bicycle from Houston, Texas to Winnipeg, Canada.

In 1980 Vernon and Darlene founded Merriman's Furniture originally located on Main Street but eventually moving to a larger location on Hwy 270 South. In 1987 Vernon suffered an inherited eye disease which left him legally blind. He never let this stop him from achieving his goals and dreams. He even adapted to using his power tools to continue his hobby of woodworking. Vernon loved traveling, camping and spending time with his family. He and his family spent many wonderful vacations together. For the past two years, Vernon and Darlene enjoyed spending summers in their motorhome in Creede, Colorado and winters in south Florida.

Vernon loved the Lord with all his heart. He was a long time member of First Assembly of God in Woodward where he served many years as Sunday School Superintendent and as Secretary/Treasurer.

Vernon was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Lolabelle Merriman, a brother, Robert Merriman, and his beloved son, John Merriman. He is survived by his wife, Darlene Merriman; Children, Krista Steuart and husband Jeran of Tulsa, Oklahoma; Kalina Guzman and husband Steven of Miami, Oklahoma; Malina Smith of Miami, Oklahoma; Caleb Merriman of Woodward, Oklahoma; Ky Merriman and wife Alli of Woodward, Oklahoma; two especially close nephews, Charles Vanaki of Edmond, Oklahoma and Nick Vanaki of Woodward, Oklahoma; 4 grandchildren, Tevin Hatley, Brodie Johnson, Tezley Green, Ellington Merriman; 3 sisters Marie Weems and husband John of Seiling, Oklahoma, Rebecca Vanaki of Woodward, Yvonne Geddes of Woodward; 2 brothers, Charles Merriman and wife Jenneth of Shreveport, Louisiana and Albert Merriman and wife Donna of Seiling; one sister-in-law Sondra Smith and husband J.L. of Chester, Oklahoma; many nieces, nephews, and friends.

He was loved and will be deeply missed, Heaven gained a great man.

Memorials may be made to the Foundation Fighting Blindness with the funeral home accepting the contributions on behalf of the family.
