The Great Depression and the Dust Bowl era began when Verla was about five, and when she was seven they moved to Centerton, Arkansas. When she was nine, they moved to Mooreland where she graduated from Mooreland High School in 1944. While Verla was in high school, she worked at Austin's Grocery Store, and then worked as a Telephone Operator after getting off work at the store. She was united in marriage to Randall Bryan Stine on May 13, 1944 in Woodward, Oklahoma. After Randall died in 1960, she ran for the office of City Clerk and held that job for six years until she and her youngest daughter Nancy moved to Enid.

She was united in marriage to Lamont Munsell on October 17, 1969 in Fairview, Oklahoma. They made their home in Mooreland. Lamont farmed and Verla worked at Dunbar IGA again for several years.
