A graveside service honoring and remembering the life of Thelma Lee Burgess will be at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, September 12, 2015, at Elmwood Cemetery in Woodward, Oklahoma. Thelma passed away Thursday morning, September 3rd with family by her side. She was 83. Born January 9, 1932, at home, on the family farm, Thelma Lee Munson was the only daughter of Thomas and Evelyn Munson. She grew up in the Kibby Community, near Buffalo attending the Kibby Elementary until it's closing, and then attended school in Fort Supply. Shortly after her graduation and upon the return of her sweetheart, George Burgess from the U.S. Navy, the two were married on July 15, 1949 in a ceremony in the comfortable setting of Thelma’s childhood home. The two made their home in Fort Supply for most of their married life before moving to Woodward for a short time and then moved to Claremore to be closer to their daughter remaining there the last five of their 65 years of marriage. Not only did Thelma and George work together at Western State Hospital, where Thelma had a 33 year career before retiring. They were both very involved in the community. Thelma helped plan and design the coin and memorial that honored the Fort Supply veterans for the Centennial celebration. The two especially enjoyed entertaining and hosting numerous get-togethers in their backyard. Thelma adored her grandchildren and loved spending time with her family.  All of whom now have special memories.  She blessed many with her gift of playing the piano throughout her life.  She was still playing during the last days of her life.  An extremely giving, generous and loving person, Thelma leaves to continue her song. Family members are: daughter, Kathy Duke and her husband, Dr. Charles Duke of Claremore; daughter-in-law, Nancy Burgess of Hutchison, KS; brothers: Eugene Munson and his wife, Rachel of Fort Supply and Eddie Munson of Buffalo; grandchildren: Stephanie Duke of Vinita, Chris Duke of Tulsa, Justin Burgess and his wife, LeeAnn of Stillwell, and Tia Burgess of Hutchison, KS; great-grandchildren: Shelby, Raylee, Kylee, Connor, Gabriel, Shallie and her husband, Colby; and one great-great-grandchild, Blakelynn Manners. She was preceded in death by her husband, George Burgess; son, Dennis Wayne Burgess; parents Thomas and Evelyn Munson, and sister-in-law, Nadine Munson and niece, Vonda Kay (Munson) Dorland. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Fort Supply United Methodist Church. Services are entrusted to Rice Funeral Service.
