Thelda's Story

Thelda Smith, 89 year old Woodward resident, died Monday, February 13, 2017 in Woodward. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm Monday, February 20, 2017 in the First Christian Church with Troy Hartley officiating. Interment will follow in Elmwood Cemetery with the Billings Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Visitation will be held on Sunday, February 19, 2017 from 1:00 pm until 6:00 pm at the funeral home.

Thelda Leone (Kirkwood) Smith was born on October 26, 1927 in Woodward, Oklahoma to Reuben Charles and Thelma Leone (Johnson) Kirkwood. Thelda was reared in Mutual and graduated from Mutual High School. After high school, Thelda studied music and English in Edmond. She was united in marriage to Weller Elmer "Poke" Smith on May 22, 1947 in Wellington, Kansas. They moved to Pomona, California following their wedding. To this union two children were born, Joan Marie and David Wesley. The family resided in Pomona, California until 1988 before moving back to Woodward, Oklahoma after retirement. While living in Pomona, Thelda worked for the Pomona Unified School District.

She was a member of the First Christian Church of Woodward, Mutual, and Pomona, California. Thelda taught Sunday School, Bible school, was a Camp Fire girls leader, and sang in the church choir. She was also very involved in the PTA, the Eastern Star, and she volunteered at the American Red Cross in Woodward. Thelda enjoyed cooking for her family, large groups in church and dinners for the Masonic Lodge and Eastern Star and Job's Daughters. Her husband, children, and five grandchildren were very blessed with her beautiful singing, her beautiful reading of poetry, and they were grateful that she taught them all to bake her famous apple pie. She won several ribbons at county fairs for her apple pie's.

Thelda is survived by her son, David W. Smith and wife Janelle of Woodward; one daughter, Joan M. Marusich and husband Larry of San Dimas, California; five grandchildren, Michelle L. Carrey, Tiffany E. Carrey, Johnna M. Luevano and husband Eddie, Rachelle Watson and husband Josh, and Lance Smith; eight great-grandchildren: Deala Sadduq, Dahrine Sadduq, Alliah Sadduq, Radi Sadduq, Allison Luevano, Annalise Luevano, Ford Carrey, and Farrah Carrey; two brothers: Tom Kirkwood and wife Louise of Argonia, Kansas, Jim Kirkwood and wife Marie of Mutual; two sisters, Glenda Haskins and husband Lester of Mooreland, Anna Anderson and husband Charles of Woodward; sister-in-law, Betty Jo Kirkwood of Woodward; other relatives and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brother, John Kirkwood; and an infant grandson, Michael Leigh Carrey.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First Christian Church with the funeral home accepting the contributions on behalf of the family.
