Ruth's Story

Ruth Wanger, 84 year old Fargo resident, died Sunday, August 13, 2017 in the Mooreland Heritage Manor. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 16, 2017 at the First Baptist Church of Woodward with Reverend Todd White officiating. Burial will follow in the Greenwood Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of the Billings Funeral Home.

Ruth Virginia (Handley) Wanger was born May 17, 1933 in Woodward, Oklahoma to Virgil Vernon and Leona Ruth (Musselman) Handley. She moved with her family at an early age to the El Paso, Texas area where they lived for a period of time before moving to Larned, Kansas. After the 1947 Woodward Tornado, the family moved back to the Fort Supply and Woodward area. Ruth attended schools in Ysleta, Texas, Larned, Kansas, Woodward, and graduated from Fort Supply High School in 1951.

She was united in marriage to Lewis Wanger on November 4, 1950 at the home of Lewiss parents in rural Fort Supply, Oklahoma. They made their first home in Fort Supply and in 1956 they moved to the Van Dorn Farm. In 1968, they bought the Flaherty Farm down the road. They moved the family into the house there in 1969 after some remodeling with the help of both of their dads. Ruth took care of her children during their school years, she milked cows, and she cooked for the students and teachers at Fort Supply School for eight years.

Ruth was a member of the Fort Supply Baptist Church. She was a great cook who always made the noodles at the church dinners and she crocheted a large picture of the Lords Supper and it is still in the Fort Supply Baptist Church and she crocheted over 100 family names for family. She made a lot of clothes for the kids and made her daughter Melindas wedding dress. Ruth loved cooking for family and friends, working in Vacation Bible School and Triple L Group, and most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family and attending the many family reunions on all sides of the family.

She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Lewis Wanger; three sons: Kenneth Wanger and wife Brenda of Woodward, Danny Wanger and wife Lucinda of Gore, Donald Wanger and wife Katy of Fort Supply; one daughter Melinda Oblander and husband Steve of Woodward; one brother Earl Handley and wife Betty of Enid; sisters-in-law, Rachel Handley of Stroud and Margaret Handley of Wichita; grandchildren, Mark Oblander, Kent Wanger, Tim Oblander, Kylie Wanger, Elizabeth (Wanger) Todd, Kaden Wanger, Ashley Wanger, Jeromy Webb, Jared Kornele, and Breanne Vang; great-grandchildren, Mikayla, Chloe, Trent, Brodie, Jadelyn, Tyler, Brady, Jordan, Hannah, Hope, Grace, Brexton, and Itialy; sisters-in-law Jackie Wanger, Dorothy Ishmael, Lily Neill and husband Don, Alice Jones and husband Lennes; brother-in-law Harold Wanger; other relatives and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Virgil Handley and wife Vivian and Leona Handley Peck and husband Clayton, an infant son, Terry Wayne Wanger, brothers, Vernon Handley, Robert Bob Handley, Jerry Handley, infant brothers, Leo Allen and Jimmy Bert Handley, and sister-in-law, Delberta Handley; sister-in-law Bonnie Wanger, brothers-in-law Lloyd Wanger and Golden Ishmael.
