Roy's Story

Roy C. Best, 96 year old Woodward resident, died Saturday, August 19, 2017 in Woodward. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 22, 2017 at the First United Methodist Church with Reverend Shannon Davis and Reverend Ray Blakley officiating. Burial will follow in the Elmwood Cemetery with the United States Army providing military rites. Arrangements are under the direction of the Billings Funeral Home.

Roy C. Best was born June 8, 1921 in Tulare, California, the third son of Oliver L. and Winnie Best. The family moved from Tulare in 1925 to May, Oklahoma where Roy lived and attended the May schools. He graduated from May High School in 1938 and attended Panhandle A&M College, now known as Panhandle State University for one year. He returned to California where he worked for Bank of America in Burbank, California. Roy joined the United States Army in 1942, and served with the 24th Infantry Division in Australia, New Guinea, the Phillippines, and Japan. After his release from the Army in 1945, he owned and operated a service station in May for a short time before going to work at the Bank of Woodward.

On September 17, 1948, Roy and Vera Nelle Allen, daughter of Owen and Estella Allen of May, Oklahoma were married in the First United Methodist Church by Reverend D. Alan Polen.

Roy and Vera were blessed with the birth of three sons, David Allen and twins, Paul Clayton and Phillip Dale.

Roy left the bank and became a clerk for the Oklahoma Gas and Electric Company in Woodward on September 15, 1949. He moved to Poteau in 1964, and returned to Woodward in 1970. He became Manager of the Woodward OG&E.

Roy served as treasurer of the First United Methodist Church for many years. He has been active in the Chamber of Commerce and was a Charter Member of the Rotary Club and served as treasurer.

Roy and his wife, Vera, loved to travel and were able to spend several enjoyable years traveling throughout the United States, Europe, England, Scotland, Wales and Veras ancestors homeland in Ireland. They celebrated 65 wonderful years on September 17, 2013.

Roy was preceded in death by his wife Vera, his parents Oliver and Winnie Best, Veras parents, Owen and Estella Allen, sons: David and Phillip, a grandson Steven and a brother Leonard and wife Genevieve and their son Stanley and daughter Creta.

He is survived by son Paul Best and wife Audrey; grandson Patrick Best and wife Desiree, Tamara Bates and husband Daryl; great-grandchildren Nash and Nashee Best and AbbyGail Bates.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Woodward American Legion with the funeral home accepting the contributions.
