Richard L. VanOverberg, 82 year old Woodward resident, died Wednesday, August 23, 2017 at his home in Woodward. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 29, 2017 at the St. Peter Catholic Church with Reverend Joe Arledge presiding. A Prayer Vigil will be held at 6:00 p.m. Monday, August 28, 2017 at the St. Peter Catholic Church. Interment will be in the Elmwood Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of the Billings Funeral Home.
Richard Louis VanOverberg was born November 22, 1934 in Kewanee, Illinois to Louis and Elanor (Coyne) VanOverberg. He grew up in Kewanee and graduated from Kewanee High School. Richard was inducted in to the United States Army and served his country during the Korean War until his honorable discharge.
He was united in marriage to Rajoma Joy Hopper and to this union they were blessed with three children, David, Mike, and Debbie. Richard began working as a X-Ray Technician and Lab Technician in Kansas before moving to Woodward in the early 1960's. He began working for the Woodward Hospital and retired after almost 40 years of service in the late 1990's.
He was a member of the St. Peter Catholic Church. He spent a lot of time volunteering at St. Peters and the Woodward Food Pantry. Richard enjoyed the outdoors and loved taking his grandson to Red River and the Grand Canyon and other state parks. He dedicated his life to his family and his church.
Survivors include two sons: David VanOverberg and wife Kim Tazz of Woodward, Mike VanOverberg and fiancee Debbie of Protection, Kansas; three grandchildren, Brian VanOverberg and wife Jenny, Krystal Zimmerman and husband Kevin, Jayme Moser and husband Brandon; great-grandchildren, Zayne Hunter-VanOverberg, Drezdon Zimmerman, Jayden Bennett, and Calvin Moser; one brother Tom VanOverberg and wife Lynn of Amherst, Ohio; his beloved pet Abbie; other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Ramona Jo, daughter Debbie, and grandson Scotty VanOverberg.
