Richard Gene Erwin, 83, of Dumas, Texas, died Jan. 31, 2015 in Dumas. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 5, 2015 at Memorial Park Funeral Home Chapel of Memories with Pastor Jerry Davey officiating. Burial will be in the Memorial Park Cemetery with military honors. Arrangements are by Memorial Park Funeral Home. Richard was born November 24, 1931 in Woodward, Oklahoma to Arthur Dewey Erwin and Gladys Gillenwater Erwin. He served in the U.S Air Force honorably as a staff sergeant which he received two medals and served in the Korean War. He graduated from Southwestern University in 1962 with a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacology degree. On June 31, 1952 he married the love of his life, Peggy Darlene Covalt in Clovis, NM. Richard and Peggy moved to Dumas, Texas in 1963 where he bought H&W Pharmacy in downtown Dumas. Then in 1971 he opened Erwin’s Pharmacy across from the hospital in Dumas. While raising his family in Dumas he was a lifetime member of the Lions Club, Rotary Club and Alpha Omega Pharmacy fraternity. One of Richard’s favorite things was to travel the world with his wife. His other passion was cooking; he loved to read cookbooks and watch Food Network. He was tremendously proud of his wife, daughters, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Clark Cecil Erwin and Robert Dean Erwin. He is survived by his wife, Peggy Erwin; daughters; Jackie and Dick Jackson of Purcell, OK; Kathy and Terry Sheldon of Amarillo, TX and Sheryl and Myles Frische of Dumas, TX. His grandchildren Dan and Ashley Jackson of Frisco, TX; Staci and Alan Campbell of Montgomery, TX; Jessica and Rory Needham of Amarillo, TX; Alicia and Tyson Wormsbaker of Borger, TX; Kristen and John Brazil of Austin, TX and Allison and Jordan Merker of Dumas, TX and 11 great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be to the Good Samaritan Fun through the Presbyterian Church in Dumas, TX. The address is PO Box 1118 Dumas, TX 79029.
