Raymond's Story

Raymond “Sonny” Gaston, 84 year old Woodward resident, died Friday, October 16, 2015 at his home surrounded by his family. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, October 19, 2015 at the Free Will Baptist Church with Dr. Allen Mabra officiating. Interment will be in the Elmwood Cemetery with the United States Army providing military graveside rites. Arrangements are under the direction of the Billings Funeral Home. Raymond C. Gaston was born on November 1, 1930 in Mutual, Oklahoma to Ray and Pauline (Cory) Gaston. Sonny spent his first grade year in Rogers, Arkansas before the family moved to Woodward. He graduated from Woodward High School in 1950 and went on to college in Alva at Northwestern. Sonny and Jean Brant were married on May 6, 1955. To this union they were blessed with two children, Teresa and Scotty. He was inducted into the United States Army in 1952 and attained the rank of Sergeant First Class. Sonny received the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Service Medal with two Bronze Service Stars, the United Nations Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. He served his country overseas in Korea in the 2nd Infantry Division, 15th field artillery Battalion, until being honorably discharged in 1954. Sonny loved music and he worked at Carpenter Music Company, Crocker Music Company, Gardners Music for 23 years, and owned and operated Gaston Mobile Villa for 14 years. He was also a contract mail route bulk carrier for six years, and he did contract lease mowing for a number of years. He was united in marriage to Delores “Murry” Crow on April 25, 1975 in Woodward, Oklahoma. They made their home in Woodward and have lived there since that time. Sonny was a charter member of the Free Will Baptist Church and was an Elder in the past. He was also a member of the Woodward VFW Post #1335. Sonny was devoted to his family, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He was proud of each and everyone them. Sonny loved traveling and camping, especially in Colorado. He loved fishing with Scott and Jane in eastern Oklahoma in the fall. Sonny played in several bands as the drummer. He is survived by his wife, Delores Gaston of the home; son, Stott Gaston and wife Jane; daughter Teresa Parker and husband Jim; Delores’s children, Ronald Crow and wife Kathy, Connie Thomsen and husband Kenny; 10 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Gordon Lawson; sister-in-law, Ruth Ann Gaston of Reno, Nevada; numerous other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Jean on April 13, 1973, four sisters, Loreta Pearson and husband Bill, Leona Wetzel and husband Ervin, Mable Pearson Taylor and husband Bobby, one brother, Jimmy Gaston. Memorials may be given to the Woodward Pregnancy Center with the funeral home accepting the contributions on behalf of the family.
