Mary's Story

Mary Lou Scott, 90 year old Woodward resident, died Saturday, December 3, 2016 at her home in Woodward surrounded by family. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, December 9, 2016 at the First United Methodist Church in Woodward with the Reverend Shannon Davis officiating. Burial will follow in the Elmwood Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of the Billings Funeral Home.

Mary Lou (Robinson) Martin Scott was born on January 20, 1926 in Freedom, Oklahoma to Hugh William Sr. and Nancy Elizabeth (Stout) Robinson. When Mary Lou was three years of age the family moved to the Haskew Community. She attended school at Sunny Slope, Freedom and graduated from Waynoka High School in 1944. During her senior year in high school, Mary Lou was united in marriage to Charles H. Martin on October 17, 1943. To this union seven children were born, Roger, Karen, Steve, Jon, Rodney, Phil, and Kathy. Mary Lou and her children moved back to Woodward in 1956, where Mary Lou worked and reared her children.

On December 24, 1959, she was united in marriage to Dale Scott in Woodward, Oklahoma. They lived in Woodward until moving to Edmond in 1983 because of Dale's work in construction. After Dale's death in 1988, Mary Lou lived in Edmond for awhile before moving back to Woodward in 1990. Mary Lou worked as an assistant for several years for Dr. Miller and as a Dental Assistant for Dr. Ruble. In 1991, Mary Lou went to work as a Receptionist for Billings Funeral Home. She was considered much more than a Receptionist, Mary Lou was a Minister, Counselor, and she helped many families through their time of grief at the funeral home.

She was a life long member of the First United Methodist Church and she served as a Stephen Minister for years.

She is survived by her five sons: Roger Martin and wife Tammy of Clinton, Steve Martin and wife Dian of Woodward, Jon Martin of Woodward, Rodney Martin of Woodward, Phil Martin of Edmond; two daughters: Karen Bell and husband Ray of Woodward, Kathy Smitherman and husband Bob of Sublette, Kansas; 18 grandchildren; numerous great and great-great-grandchildren; one brother Robert "Bob" Robinson and wife Vera Lee of Woodward; numerous nieces, nephews, dear cousins, other relatives and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Dale Scott, brother Hugh Robinson Jr. and wife Juanita.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church with the funeral home accepting contributions on behalf of the family.
