Mary Houghton, 89 year old former Woodward resident, died Tuesday, July 10, 2018 in The Linden Assisted Living Center in Tulsa. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 14, 2018 in the Billings Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Scott Ware officiating. Burial will follow in the Elmwood Cemetery.
Mary Kathryn (Davis) Houghton was born June 28, 1929 west of Tangier, Oklahoma; she was the daughter of Arch and Katie (Bennett) Davis. Mary attended grade school in Tangier until the seventh grade. The family moved to Woodward in 1944 and Mary graduated from Woodward High School in 1949. During her high school years, Mary worked with several jobs through the Trade and Industrial program in the school system.
She was united in marriage to John Wesley Houghton on February 12, 1949 at the First Christian Church of Woodward. To this union they were blessed with two children, Ron and Gary. In later years, Mary worked for Bob Outhier Agency, Vassar Armstrong Motor Company and Lanes Transfer and Storage.
She attended the Quinlan United Methodist Church. She was also a member of the VFW Auxiliary Post 1335 and she served on the Board of Directors of Kids Inc in the late 1960's. Mary enjoyed going to garage sales, drinking coffee with friends, going to basketball games with John and most of all doing things with her grandchildren.
Survivors include two sons: Ronald Gene Houghton and wife Tammy of Tulsa; Gary J. Houghton and wife Karen of Edmond; grandaughter Meagan Schofield and husband Jeremy of Moore, great-granddaughter Alyssa Schofield and great-grandsons Mason Schofield and Jackson Schofield; granddaughter Lauren Gardner and husband John of Wilmington, NC; grandson Trent Houghton and wife Anna of Nashville, TN; grandson John Menzies of Atlanta, GA; granddaughter Katie Houghton of Midwest City; grandson John W. Houghton II of Atlanta, GA; granddaughter Mary Joy Houghton of Tulsa; granddaughter Melissa Arie and husband Nate of Broken Arrow, great-granddaughters Addison, Nora, and Jules Arie; granddaughter Melinda Colquitt and husband Brett of Guthrie and great-grandsons Bryce Colquitt and Brayden Colquitt.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents; her husband John on February 9, 2004; three brothers Ray, Claude and Gene Davis; three sisters Vesta Parsons, Dorothy Nelson, and Cloeta Simons.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Quinlan United Methodist Church with the funeral home accepting donations on behalf of the family.
