Lois Irene Marston Hughes passed away March 6, 2016, at the age of 93 in Houston, Texas, surrounded by her loving family. Funeral services will be held at the Billings Funeral Home Chapel on Saturday, March 12th at 10:00 AM with Reverend Bill Coburn officiating. The burial will immediately follow at the Elmwood Cemetery.

Lois was born November 23, 1922, on a farm west of Vici, Oklahoma, to Marion and Goldie Vaughan Marston. Shortly thereafter the family moved to Woodward where Lois attended the Woodward schools, graduating with the class of 1939.

In 1942 Lois married William Thomas Hughes in Fitchburg, Massachusetts. To this union three children were born-Carol, William Thomas Jr, and Janet. In the early fifties, Lois attended L.P.N. School and went on to work at the Woodward Hospital for 10 years and the Fetzer-Meece Clinic for over 20 years. She was a long time member of the First Christian Church where she was active in the Ruth Group of C.W.F.

After retiring, she spent many years volunteering for different organizations, including The Red Cross, Oklahoma Blood Institute, delivering meals for the Nutrition Council at the Senior Citizen Nutrition Center and over 25 years for the Woodward Community Pantry. She was a member of the Oklahoma Retired Senior Volunteers and in 2001 was awarded the honor of Volunteer of the Year for Woodward County.

In 2011 she moved to Houston to be closer to her daughter, Janet, and her family. She made her home at Paradise Springs Independent Living Center and while there continued her legacy of serving others. She was active in every social event and rekindled her enjoyment of crafting. She made it a point to assist anyone less mobile than she was, including grocery shopping for some of the other residents and delivering menus to the entire community every Friday. The common thread in Lois' life was her strong desire to care and serve others. She also loved to collect and gift angel figurines and her loved ones are comforted that she has received wings of her own and will forever be their Guardian Angel.

She was preceded in death by her parents, four sisters, four brothers, her beloved daughter, Carol, and 2 grandchildren. She is survived by two brothers, Jim Marston and wife Merlene of Ponca City, Vernon Marston and wife Shirley of Loveland, Colorado, her son Tom Hughes and wife Leta, of Roswell, GA, her daughter Janet Oppliger and husband Terry of Houston, TX, 7 Grandchildren, 9 Great Grandchildren and 1 Great Great Grandchild.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Christian Church of Woodward, Oklahoma, with Billings Funeral Home accepting the contributions.
