Kenneth's Story

Kenneth Lee Scates , 94, passed away peacefully with family by his side at the Grace Living Center in Woodward on Tuesday, January 12, 2016. Grave side funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm Friday, January 15, 2016 in Elmwood Cemetery with the Billings Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Kenneth was born May 9. 1921 in Richmond, OK to Clint And Nellie (Russau) Scates. He grew up and graduated in Richmond. Kenneth served in the United States Army in WW II in the 88th Quartermaster Company and spent 23 months in Italy where he received 3 Bronze Stars. In 1946, Kenneth married Reba Gaston. She passed away in 1947. In 1949, he married Mary Gardner, They were blessed with four children and farmed and ranched in the Woodward and Quinlan areas. In 1970, he married Marilyn (Loomis) Wyckoff and joined her family of four daughters. They farmed in the Freedom area and he worked for the City. After retirement, they moved to Woodward where they farmed and he worked for Walmart and impressed Sam Walton with his knowledge of the hunting season dates. When he retired from Walmart, he was surprised with a plaque from Sam himself. He and Marilyn enjoyed traveling, camping, spending time with their family and grandchildren. After Marilyn passed away in 2008, Kenneth was lovingly cared for by Linda and her children and grandson Austin. Kenneth was an awesome father and grandfather and left behind many wonderful memories for his family to cherish. He is survived by his children, Michael Scates (Kay); Karen Rhyne; Mary Winn; Linda Brewer; Treasa Brady (Randy); Sandy (Allen); Venita Wyckoff; Benita Garza; 14 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren. Preceding him in death were his wives Reba Scates; Marilyn Scates, and brother Keith In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Faith Hospice or the Grace Living Center with the funeral home accepting the contributions.
