Jarvis's Story

J. C. Ellis, 73 year old Woodward resident, passed from this life on Tuesday, February 14, 2017 in Woodward, with his family by his side. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, February 17, 2017 at the First Christian Church. Burial will follow in the Elmwood Cemetery. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the United States Navy. Arrangements are under the direction of the Billings Funeral Home.

Jarvis Clayton Ellis Jr., was born on May 24, 1943 to Jarvis Clayton and Darree (Moore) Ellis in Carthage, Mississippi in his grandfather's home. He graduated from Magnolia High School in May of 1962. J.C. served a year of duty in 1963 in the Merchant Marines on a Tanker Ship. He was united in marriage to Jennifer Lee in 1965 and to this union Christine Lynn was born on May 23, 1965. Kimberly Gaye was born to the union with Lynn Graham on March 22, 1971.

J.C. moved to Woodward, Oklahoma in 1971 working in the oilfield. He was united in marriage to Melinda Starr on March 16, 1972 in Woodward, Oklahoma. To this union two daughters were born: Tammy Shay on June 25, 1976 in Woodward and Tiffany Starr on on September 6, 1982 in Oklahoma City. J.C. and Melinda spent 44 years together and made their home in Woodward. J.C. worked for various oilfield companies during the years. He worked for the High Plains Vo-Tech for about three years, teaching the first Well Servicing classes in the State of Oklahoma which was funded by the federal government.

J.C. and Melinda both retired in 2006. They both attended the First Christina Church. They enjoyed camping and playing cards.

He is survived by his wife Melinda of the home; daughters: Tammy of Oklahoma City, Tiffany and Justin Kimball of Woodward, Christine of Canton, Mississippi, and Kimberly and husband Chris Roberts of Concord, North Carolina; grandchildren: Celeste, Parker, Conner, Allie, Alex, and Cooper; three sisters: Doris and Danny Simkin of Spring, Texas, Wanda and Bobby Williams of Zachary, LA and Janie Fountain of D'Iberville, Mississippi; brothers-in-law and sister-in-law, Tony Starr and wife Debra of Cookson, Oklahoma, Jerry Star of Mooreland; many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. J.C. is also survived by his very dear friends: Ted and Teresa Rayborn of McComb, Mississippi and Randy and Becky Willis of Woodward.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his grandparents, parents-in-law, Frosty and Nita Starr and brother-in-law, Tommy G. Starr.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation, Cancer, Diabetes, or Lung research with the funeral home accepting the contributions on behalf of the family.
