James's Story

Text size

James "Jim" Pierson was born at the family home in Fargo, Oklahoma on February 14, 1931 to Sherman Clarence Pierson and Mabel Cora (Larason) Pierson.

He attended Vici Elementary, the American Military Academy in Bartlesville, Oklahoma and graduated from a private school in Dallas, Texas. His love of cars started at an early age when he began helping his dad restore them. He sold his first car at the age of 10. He was also a Boy Scout, learned how to fly planes, and he played football while attending AMA.

While attending school in Dallas he met Imogene Petty who was working at Kings Ice Cream Parlor and also attending school. He was smitten with the pretty girl making the sundaes. They wed August 11, 1948 in a garden wedding at Athel May (Larason) and Baxter Taylor's home in Dallas, Texas.

He brought her home to Vici where they lived from 1948 to 1951. In 1951 they moved to Woodward where they operated Pierson Motors until 1959 with Jim's brother Leo Pierson. He sold Nash, Buick and farm implements. He was an active member of the Elks and Kiwanis Club. He was one of the first children's Kiwanis train conductors at Crystal Springs Park. In 1955, they started their family by adopting their first child, a boy, Kim. The young family moved to Oklahoma City in 1959. He sold cars briefly before deciding farm living outside of Vici was a better life for his young family.

In 1960, they returned to Vici to operate Vici Hardware until 1964. Then they opened up the Vici Retail Package Store which they ran together until 2007. In 1966, they added to their family, by adopting their second child, a girl, Elizabeth "Betty Jean."

He greatly enjoyed farming with his dad, life in the country, good music and dancing. He and Jean even won a 3rd Place square dancing trophy when Highway 60 was dedicated. After Jean passed, he attended dances all across Oklahoma and was blessed by two special friends and dance partners, Nora McCleary, of Vici, OK and after her passing, Delores Allen, of Bridge Creek, OK.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents Sherman C. and Mabel C. Pierson, wife Imogen "Jean" Pierson, brothers Leo Pierson and Sherman C. Pierson, Jr.

He is survived by his son, Kim Pierson and his wife Aviva of Stillwater; his daughter, Elizabeth and his son-in-law, Dwayne Moss, of Amber, OK; and 8 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother- and sister-in-law's: Jim Petty and his wife Barbara of Mineral Wells, TX; Nina VanderWeide and her husband John of Georgetown, TX; Horace Petty and his wife Linda of Hurst, TX; Durwood Petty and his wife Shirley of Burleson, TX; Evelyn Ferguson of Bedford, TX; Olen Petty of Bedford, TX; Denzil Petty of Fort Worth, TX; Kenneth Petty and his wife Lynda of Bryan, TX; Gerald Petty of Weatherford, TX; Janice Harrington and her husband Larry of Weatherford, TX and 32 nieces and nephews.
