Helen's Story

Helen Maxine Van Brocklin Horner Bratten was born June 8, 1927 on the family farm Southwest of Woodward, OK. She was the youngest of seven children born to Ernest Leroy Van Brocklin and Mabel Francis (Oakley) Van Brocklin. Helen attended school in a small room school (Happy Valley Rural School) not far from the family farm and then later transferred to Tangier to complete school. She graduated from Tangier in 1944 with a class of 3 members. Helen married Norman Knauer later in 1944 and moved to Reading, Pennsylvania. She met Norman while he was stationed at the air base that was at the Woodward Airport during WWII. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church while living in Pennsylvania in 1946. In 1948, Helen moved back to Woodward, OK. To this union one daughter, Carol was born. Helen was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Woodward, OK. She taught the nursery school Sunday school class for many years, she has worked and served on the Altar Guild for many years and has been in charge of the funeral dinners at the church for various families. She was involved with the church ladies with quilts for missions for projects. In 1950, Helen married Frank Horner in Woodward; Frank preceded her in death in 1982. Carol was adopted by Frank in 1951. In 1993 she married Travis Duane Bratten and he preceded her in death in April of 2007. Helen was an avid craft person. She loved to crochet, dolies, Afghans, etc. She made sure the kids and grandkids had quilts that she had made. She made bibs and lap robes for the local nursing homes and the Veterans Hospital in Clinton. Helping people was always a passion in her life. Helen is survived by her daughter Carol Gifford of Woodward, two granddaughters, Marlene Myers and husband David of Woodward and Darlene Walker and husband Chad of Canadian, TX; two very special great grandchildren Chance and Gracen Walker of Canadian, TX; several brother and sister-in-laws, several God children of which she was very proud to be their Godmother, and many nieces and nephews and a host of friends. Helen was preceded in death by two husbands, Frank Horner and Duane Bratten, her parents Ernest and Mabel Van Brocklin, three sisters, Edith Revert, Dorothy Winterfield, and Ruth Asher and one brother Everett Van Brocklin, a baby sister and baby brother that died in infancy, and a special son-in-law, Lloyd Gifford. In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to the Oklahoma Medical Research and the funeral home acting as custodian. Visitation will be Sunday, 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Tuesday, 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Shaw Funeral Home in Vici. On Wednesday you will be able to view at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Woodward from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m Services will be held at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Woodward on Wednesday, May 27, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. Burial will follow at the Elmwood Cemetery in Woodward.
