Columbia, S.C. - Elvin Merle Brewer, 86, of Columbia, South Carolina, passed away, Wednesday, October 4, 2017. Born June 25, 1931, in Cedardale, Oklahoma, he was a son of the late Wiley Brewer and Jennie Francis (Harris) Brewer Banta.
Elvin attend Happy Hollow, Quilan, and Seiling High Schools. He served in the US Army for four years, which included a tour in Germany. He met Martha Louise Harris in Louisville, Kentucky and married her on December 31, 1950. Together, they had six children and he later had another daughter. He worked as a mechanic all his life, including his time in the US Army. After retiring in 2003, at the age of 72, he enjoyed working on lawn equipment, small engine repair, reading, fishing, and playing cards.
Survivors include his children, Brenda Roberts (Lonnie), Douglas Brewer (Tammie), Janice Mitchell (John), Donna Lewis (Geary), Lori Ann Van Zee, Glenda Stewart (Kevin), and Dawn Brewer; 14 grandchildren; and 33 great-grandchildren. Also, surviving are sisters, Betty Satori (Fred), Carol Brewer; and brothers, Jess Ray Brewer, and J.C. Cooley (Sandy). In addition to his parents, Mr. Brewer was preceded in death by a sister and brother-in-law, Rita and Duane Seaman; grandson, Trent Lewis; and great-grandson, Connor Boyd.
A graveside service for Mr. Brewer will be held 9:30 o'clock, Monday, October 9th, at Fort Jackson National Cemetery with The Rev. Kenneth Walter officiating. The family will receive friends from 4 until 6 o'clock, Sunday, October 8th, at Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, 7600 Trenholm Road Ext., Columbia.
