Dorothy's Story

Dorothy Frederick, 85 year old Woodward resident, died Saturday, April 9, 2016 at her daughters home in Waukomis. Memorial services will be held at 1:00 pm Saturday, April 16, 2016 in the Billings Funeral Home Chapel with James Bailey officiating. A private family burial will be held at a later date.

Dorothy Okima (Hinson) Frederick was born March 1, 1931 to Alvin Walker and Gladys Lee (Howell) Hinson at the home of her aunt in Fowler, Kansas. She lived with her parents and two sisters in Minneola, Ulysses, and Fowler, Kansas until 1942 when the family moved to Meade, Kansas. She graduated from Meade High School in 1948. She was baptized in 1946 joining the First Baptist Church in Meade. During her teen years she was an active member of the Baptist Youth Fellowship. She was a member of the First Christian Church of Woodward. On March 7, 1948 she was united in marriage to the love of her life, Lester L. Frederick at Perryton, Texas. He died on August 26, 2004. They became the parents of seven children, three daughters and four sons. The family lived in Meade, Kansas and for 12 years at the Michigan-Wisconsin Compressor station housing area south of Meade. In 1968, the family moved to Laverne when Les was transferred. In 1972 Dorothy had just started in the practical nursing program at Woodward when Les was transferred to Enterprise, Kansas. She transferred to the nursing program at Manhattan, Kansas and graduated in August 1973. She was employed at the Geary County Community Hospital at Junction City until Les was again transferred, this time Mooreland's Michigan-Wisconsin operations. At that time they moved to Woodward and Dorothy was employed for two years at Woodward Memorial Hospital. After completing the academic requirements at Northwestern State University in Alva, she entered the Northwest Texas Hospital School of Nursing "ladder" program at Amarillo, Texas in 1978 and graduated in 1979. Following graduation she began working as a Registered Nurse at Western State Psychiatric Hospital at Fort Supply. In 1991 she left that employment and has been retired since.

During their retirement years Dorothy and Les traveled often. They made several trips to Germany visiting their daughter, son-in-law and twin granddaughters. They went on numerous tours during these trips and saw much of Europe. They also spent the winter months of several years in their RV in Yuma, Arizona.

Dorothy was devoted to her family and was always ready to lend a helping hand. She leaves as her survivors, her seven children, Patricia Clark; L. Mike Frederick and wife Joyce, Ronnie Frederick and wife Sandy all of Woodward; Terry Frederick and wife Lynda of Onaga, Kansas; Gayla Bartow of Waukomis; Kathryn Foster and husband Tommy of Amarillo, Texas; Keith Frederick and wife Alice of Shawnee; 15 grandchildren, Carri Bartow Watkins; Sherri Bartow Mays; Shelby Dawn Myrick; Johnny Frederick; Pamela Frederick Brokaw; Tammi Frederick; Rebecca Frederick Crawford; Craig Frederick; Diane Frederick Owens; Darin Frederick; Adam Clark; Kyle Frederick; Kevin Frederick; Kayla Frederick Gardner; Caleb Frederick; 24 great-grandchildren, Amanda; Zachary; Desa; Billy; Taylor; Skyler; Justin; Gage; Ryland; Brianna; Raylie; JaCoby; Devyn; Rance; Karley; Morghan; Katlyn; Molly; Dylan; Matthew; Timothy; Mason; Hayden; Brayden; Prudence; Maleigh; Meika; Ryder; Grayson; Mason; six great-great-grandchildren, Adelynn; Chloe; Remington; Hunter; Sterling; and Benjamin; one brother in law, Norman Butler of Benton, Kansas; one sister in law, Elsie Burnett of Galesburg, Kansas; numerous nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband she was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters, Maggie Ellen Butler and Char Lee Heatley; a six year old brother Robb Bessac; one grandson, Gary Frederick. Also 21 of her 24 first cousins.
