Darrel Riffel, 81 year old Woodward resident, died Wednesday, February 21, 2018 in Enid, Oklahoma. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, March 3, 2018 in the Billings Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Shannon Davis officiating. Burial will follow in the Elmwood Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of the Billings Funeral Home.
Loren Darrel Riffel was born March 3, 1936 to Charles and Fern (Abbott) Riffel of Shattuck, Oklahoma. He attended Highland Country School for three years before transferring to Shattuck schools where he graduated in 1954. Darrel was one of six children born to the Riffels.
After graduating from high school, he worked in both Perryton, Texas and Liberal, Kansas before being drafted into the Armed Forces. He served in Germany for 1 ½ years before returning to Shattuck. He worked for Gene Herble in the tile and construction business for three months before being recalled to the military. After an additional year in the military, he again returned to Shattuck, Oklahoma where he met Betty Lou Hawthorne. They married May 23, 1963 and resided in Shattuck for two years. In 1965, they moved to Woodward, Oklahoma where they operated the Wayfarer Inn for 18 years. In 1983, Darrel began working for various companies managing hotels and restaurants and the family moved to various locations throughout the United States. In 1990, Darrel and his family moved back to Woodward and purchased JBs Steakhouse.
Darrel was very active in the Woodward community serving as President for the Woodward Jaycees, Kids Inc, and the Woodward Lions Club. He coached numerous Kids Inc. Teams, and was active in the Woodward Chamber of Commerce as well.
In 2002, Darrel became interested in writing and published Country Schools and in 2004 he published In the Shadows of the Law and Beyond.
Darrel is predeceased by his wife Betty Riffel, his daughter Michele Riffel, and his parents and all five of his siblings.
He is survived by his son Craig Riffel and his wife Katresa of Enid, Oklahoma, their two children Colburn and Kamber Riffel, his son Chris Riffel of Woodward and his son Ethan Riffel, sister-in-law, Carolyn Riffel of Woodward, brother-in-law Arlyn Reinehart of Colorado, and numerous nieces and nephews.
