Coach Bill's Story

Coach Bill Hemingway, 62 year old former Woodward resident and current Vicksburg, Mississippi resident, died Monday, August 29, 2016 in Mississippi. A Memorial Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, September 9, 2016 at the St. Peter Catholic Church in Woodward, Oklahoma with the Reverend Joe Arledge officiating. Burial will follow in the Elmwood Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of the Billings Funeral Home.

William Anthony "Bill" Hemingway was born on May 10, 1954 in Enid, Oklahoma to William Lee "Bill" and Jean (Partido) Hemingway. He grew up in Enid and Woodward and graduated from Woodward High School in 1972. Coach Hemingway attended and played football for the University of Arkansas. He received his Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Delta State University in Mississippi. Coach Hemingway was a college football coach and his coaching stints include Delta State University, Oklahoma State University, the University of Miami, University of Arkansas-Monticello, Oklahoma Panhandle State University, paul Quinn College, and Arkansas Baptist College. He was currently coaching linebackers and special teams at Copiah-Lincoln College. While at Copiah-Lincoln, Coach Hemingway has coached Wolfpack players who were selected to play in the MACIC All-Star Game each season both at running back and kicker. He as worked for Nike select football combines as well as National Football League player camps and has played for and coached with several notable coaches including Frank Broyles, Lou Holtz, Jimmy Johnson, Houston Nutt, Pat Jones, Larry Coker, Pete Carroll, Monte Kiffin, Butch Davis, and many current college and NFL coaches.

He was a member of the St. Francis of Isisi in Brookhaven, Mississippi. Coach Hemingway was also a member of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity, the Knights of Columbus, the Mississippi Coaches Association, the American Football Coaches Association, and was a member of the A-Club. He loved spending time with his family and friends. The Copiah-Lincoln College kids and coaches were his life and his family.

He is survived by his father, William Lee "Bill" Hemingway; one son, William Matthew "Matt" Hemingway and wife Amber; one daughter Andrea Salinas and husband Kyle; two brothers Bob Hemingway and wife Natalie, Larry Hemingway and wife Kellie; one sister Maria Bucknam and husband Ed; six grandchildren and a special cousin Edith "Cookie" Murillo.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Jean Partido Hemingway.

If there is a football team in Heaven, Coach Hemingway is surely calling the play.
