Charles E. Smitty Smith, 91 year old longtime owner of Smittys Welding, died Sunday, May 27, 2018 at his home in Woodward. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 6, 2018 at the Lincoln Avenue Baptist Church, Lincoln Campus with Reverend Jason Dirks officiating. Burial will follow in the Elmwood Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of the Billings Funeral Home.
Charles Edward Smith was born August 30, 1926 in Gurdon, Arkansas to Benjamin Geter and Nettie Jeanerre (Ellis) Smith. He was the only boy having three older sisters and later one younger sister. Smitty attended Gurdon Schools until 1942, when he joined the United States Navy. He served on the USS San Francisco and was stationed in San Diego, California and Roosevelt Base Terminal Island, California. Smitty was honorably discharged in March of 1946 earning one Bronze Star Phillipine Liberation, One silver star Asiato-Pacific, American Area and Victory Medal. He returned to Arkansas for a short time before going back to Terminal Island in San Pedro, California, there he would start his welding career, welding on cargo ships.
On February 11, 1949, he was united in marriage to Elsie Osborne and to this union six children were born, Steve, Lynette, Mike, Brenda, Theresa, and Diane. In 1973, he moved to Woodward and was united in marriage to his wife of 43 years Lois Binger Meier on April 12, 1975.
Smitty began a longtime business with Smittys Welding that lasted over 44 years until his retirement.
He is survived by his wife Lois Smith of the home; children: Steve Smith of Buena Park, California, Lynette Bell of Woodward, Mike Smith of Woodwarde, Brenda Salas and husband John of Huntington Beach, California, Theresa Troutner of Woodward and Diane Smith of Edmond; step-children, Jackie Stallings and husband Jesse of Tishamingo, Randy Meier of Tishamingo, and Cindy Scott of Woodward; 17 grandchildren: Julie Smith, Michael Bell, Kristie Bell, Melissa Salas, Angela McDonald, Michael Smith, Johnny Salas, Misty Thomazin, Chris Watson, Donny Troutner, Tiffany Watson, Sean Smith, Priscilla Frey, Ellie Baird, Connor Smith, Jamie Stewart, Jacob Smith and their families; 26 great-grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren, Jessa Daviodson, Michael Stallings, Celina Stallings, Kelby Scott, Brock Scott, Tony Davis, Alison Weiszbrod; 14 step-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters, Jewel Smith, Tular Karr, Fairy Lee Bell, and Inez Lee, grandson Jason Smith, stepson, Alan Meier, daughter-in-law Debbie Smith, son-in-law Mike Bell and son-in-law Don Troutner.
