Catherine Ann Grundhauser

April 05, 1962 - July 17, 2018

Catherine Anne (Phelan) Grundhauser, beloved daughter of Raymond Fletcher Phelan and Genevieve Julia (Shewmaker) Phelan (now Duncan) was born on April 5, 1962 in Baruta (a suburb of Caracas, Venezuela). At three months old she moved with her parents to Munich Germany. She and her mother returned to the United States in February of 1965 to await the arrival of her little brother who was born in El Paso, Texas. In July of that year the three joined her father in Johnson County, Kansas, where they resided until June of 1976 when the family relocated to Berkley Heights, New Jersey. In 1981, the family moved to Marin County, California, where Catherine lived until December, 2015, with the exception of four years when she and her husband, Philip Grundhauser, whom she married in April of 1988, made their home for two years in Washington state and two years in Nevada. Just before Christmas of 2015, she moved to Woodward to join her mother and stepfather, Gary Duncan.

Catherine had a varied working career. She especially liked to work at anything automotive, having taken auto mechanics in high school. She also loved music and played the string bass from 4th grade until her junior year. She was a member of honors orchestras both in grade school and high school.

Catherine was interested in everything; she took special delight in nature and loved being outdoors. Cooking gave her particular delight and she and her mother had the most fun when collaborating on a meal.

She is survived by her mother and father, stepfather; brother and sister-in-law, Frank and Nina (Wright) Phelan of Cedar Park, Texas; uncle Carl Shewmaker of Bellingham, Washington; niece, Elizabeth Phelan of Washington, D.C.; and nephew James Phelan, en route to graduate school in Denmark. Also, is survived by cousins Suzy Shewmaker Hicks and husband Steve of El Paso, Texas; James Shewmaker and wife Susan of Atlanta, Georgia; Judy (Shewmaker) Pine and husband George; Edie Brown (Shewmaker) and husband Todd; Margaret (Phelan) Stark and husband Phil; Sara (Phelan) Singer and husband Thom; and numerous 2nd and 3rd cousins.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 21, at 11:00 a.m. at the Lincoln Avenue Baptist Church at 17th and Lincoln, Pastor Jason Dirks officiating.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers those who wish to make remembrances donate to the new homeless shelter, High Plains Outreach Center. Donations may be made through the Lincoln Avenue Baptist Church or Billings Funeral Home.

Remembrances may be shared online at www.billingsfuneralhomewoodward.com
