Avis's Story

Avis Whittaker, 74 year old Woodward resident, passed away Sunday, February 26, 2017 in Oklahoma City, surrounded by her family. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, March 3, 2017 at the First Christian Church with the Reverend David Evans and Troy Hartley officiating. Burial will follow in the Elmwood Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of the Billings Funeral Home.

Avis Clarene (Garnett) Whittaker was born on April 14, 1942 in Woodward, Oklahoma to Waldo Eugene and Rena Alice (Smith) Garnett. Avis grew up on the family farm ten miles south and two miles west of Buffalo. She graduated from Ft. Supply High School and attended a year at Northwestern Oklahoma State University in Alva, before going on and graduating from Enid Beauty College. She was united in marriage to Steve A. Whittaker on June 7, 1963 at the First Christian Church of Buffalo, Oklahoma. They made their home at 2nd and Oklahoma in Woodward and a short time later they moved to the Woodward Golf Course.

Avis owned and operated the Beauty Box in Buffalo along with her friend Janet Helmuth. She later worked at the Cameo Beauty Shop in Woodward, before she and Steve took over operating the Woodward Golf Course for 39 years and nine months. For the past 11 years she has been, managing the office, and keeping Mike and Steve in line at Northwest Golf Cars.

Avis loved the activities at her church and anything with her family, especially attending grandkids ball games and events. She loved walking with her dog Zoey and mentoring, especially her friend Trent at Highland Park. She also enjoyed visiting with her neighbors, crafting, sewing, cooking, working in her yard, gardening and cake decorating with Laverna Dezort for numerous weddings and special occasions for family and friends. Avis loved celebrating and decorating with her family for any and all holidays.

She was an Elder at the First Christian Church. She was very involved in Cooks for Christ, Wednesday morning Bible study and just about anything that happened in the kitchen.

She is survived by her husband Steve A. Whittaker of the home; one son, Mike Whittaker of Woodward; two daughters: Michelle Williamson and husband Bruce of Woodward, Milissa Sturgill and husband Troy of Mooreland; five grandchildren, Whitley, Amelia, and Gracen Williamson, John and Evelyn Sturgill; mother-in-law, Evelyn Whittaker; sister-in-law, Bonnie Garnett of Alva; brohter-in-law Richard Whittaker and wife Barbara of Enid; sister-in-law Connie Welch and husband Joe of Woodward; her adopted mother Juanita Schmidt and many other relatives and close friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Waldo and Rena Garnett, one brother Waldo Galen "Dub" Garnett, and her father-in-law Dr. Richard Whittaker.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First Christian Church Youth Fund with the funeral home accepting the contributions on behalf of the family.
